The North Mankato City Council has approved an ordinance amendment reducing buffer zones for certain cannabis businesses.

The change, passed October 19th, keeps the existing one-thousand-foot buffer between cannabis retailers and schools.

However, the buffer for businesses that don’t serve customers on-site, including cultivation, manufacturing and transportation operations, will be reduced to 500 feet.

The change could make more industrial properties available to cannabis businesses, including the former Mankato Brewery building on Center Street.

The Minnesota Office of Cannabis Management says cities can establish buffer zones to separate cannabis businesses from places such as schools, day cares and residential treatment facilities.
